True Salvation
A Treaties on not looking beyond the mark

By Frederick Schafer

38 And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.
39 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.
40 And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the winds beat upon them.
41 Therefore, go forth unto this people, and declare the words which I have spoken, unto the ends of the earth.

So if this is the case, then what did Joseph Smith reveal about Exaltation? First of all he revealed that Exaltation comes by way of the Calling and Election, which is NOT a Priesthood Ordinance. Joseph Smith revealed that ones Calling and Election is made by being valiant and faithful to God, and that it can be revealed to us by Revelation in something he called the More Sure Word of Prophecy. Here is one of his references to it.

"Now, there is some grand secret here, and keys to unlock the subject. Notwithstanding the apostle exhorts them to add to their faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, etc., yet he exhorts them to make their calling and election sure. And though they had heard an audible voice from heaven bearing testimony that Jesus was the Son of God, yet he says we have a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed as unto a light shining in a dark place. Now, wherein could they have a more sure word of prophecy than to hear the voice of God saying, This is my beloved Son.

Now for the secret and grand key. Though they might hear the voice of God and know that Jesus was the Son of God, this would be no evidence that their election and calling was made sure, that they had part with Christ, and were joint heir with him. They then would want that more sure word of prophecy, that they were sealed in the heavens and had the promise of eternal life in the kingdom of God. Then, having this promise sealed unto them, it was an anchor to the soul, sure and steadfast. Though the thunders might roll and lightnings flash, and earthquakes bellow, and war gather thick around, yet this hope and knowledge would support the soul in every hour of trial, trouble and tribulation. Then knowledge through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the grand key that unlocks the glories and mysteries of the kingdom of heaven."

(TPJS p.298)

In light of this someone might ask, "So what then is the purpose of the Temple Ordinances, Washing of Feet and Second Anointing?" My answer is simple. They are designed to do what they appear to do. Sealing is about family relationships and being Sealed ultimately to God, not about attaining a certain level and rank in Heaven. The Washing of Feet is an act of Charity to cover another's sins when you feel they have done their best to clean themselves of the blood and sins of this Generation through the blood of the lamb, also making a bond between you and them. The Second Anointing is about being coroneted a King or Queen, a Priest or Priestess. This of course could be done during the millennium.

There however is a great many Mormons in fear and trembling about not qualifying for a Second Anointing, or not getting all the ordinances, or not finding someone to marry them; they are in a great panic, when this is not the doctrine of Christ. This is the definition of looking beyond the mark. In D&C 76 God tells us how to attain Exaltation and what it means. Read this very carefully.

50 And again we bear record—for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just—
51 They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given—
52 That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power;
53 And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true.
54 They are they who are the church of the Firstborn.
55 They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things—
56 They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fulness, and of his glory;
57 And are priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the Only Begotten Son.
58 Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God—
59 Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
60 And they shall overcome all things.
61 Wherefore, let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet.
62 These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever.
63 These are they whom he shall bring with him, when he shall come in the clouds of heaven to reign on the earth over his people.
64 These are they who shall have part in the first resurrection.
65 These are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just.
66 These are they who are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly place, the holiest of all.
67 These are they who have come to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of Enoch, and of the Firstborn.
68 These are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all.
69 These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.
70 These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical.

Notice that in 52 it says that "That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed". I believe this is a reference to not needing to receive all the higher ordinances before one dies. It is about being valiant not about relying on the arm of flesh. Notice that after Baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost it does not mention another mandatory ordinance and yet these are they who stand on Mount Zion? Who are the Church of the Firstborn? This is the Rock of Christ, going on from Baptism and receiving the Spirit and being valiant and praying for your Calling and Election to be made sure by the life that you live, just as the New Testament tells us. If we needed secret back room ordinances from specific people before we die it would have been part of the Fullness of the Gospel contained in the Book of Mormon.

The higher ordinances are beautiful and pertain to the Priesthood, and are designed for specific purposes; but attaining a higher level is not their purpose. In D&C 76:96-98 we learn that the Glory of the Sun is one, the Glory of the Moon is one, but the Glory of the stars differ in Glory. Refuting the later and much tampered with D&C 131.

Joseph Smith promised faithful Saints such as his Father, Alvin and King Follett Godhood long before Brigham introduced the new Temple order, he explained that it was just about being faithful in the King Follett Discourse. Here are a few of his words.

"Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power."

He also says,

"The mind or the intelligence which man possesses is co-equal [co-eternal] with God himself. I know that my testimony is true; hence, when I talk to these mourners, what have they lost? Their relatives and friends are only separated from their bodies for a short season: their spirits which existed with God have left the tabernacle of clay only for a little moment, as it were; and they now exist in a place where they converse together the same as we do on the earth,

I am dwelling on the immortality of the spirit of man. Is it logical to say that the intelligence of spirits is immortal, and yet that it has a beginning? The intelligence of spirits had no beginning, neither will it have an end. That is good logic. That which has a beginning may have an end. There never was a time when there were not spirits; for they are co-equal [co-eternal] with our Father in heaven."

(King Follett Discourse)

As Asaph and Jesus Christ said, we are Gods, and as Joseph Smith said we are Eternal and we progress line upon line. Joseph Smith also said,

"That same sociality that we enjoy here, we shall have there; only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which we do not now enjoy."

(D&C 130:2)

So one does not have to be Sealed to a family member to remain with them, and higher ordinances can be done now or after death. The true meaning of Sealing is being Sealed up to Christ, and organizing families in the Celestial Order. With this clarification on Salvation and the nature of the Celestial Kingdom, all the power and control structures of the Church come tumbling down. Build your foundation on the Rock of the Gospel of Christ, not upon the fear of attaining salvation from the arm of flesh.

"And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not."  (3 Nephi 9:20)
